Allyship Workshops
allyship training with an emphasis on action
ALLY LAB offers allyship training through in-person workshops, virtual meetings, and hybrid sessions. All of these allyship training experiences are designed to be richly interactive, participatory, and fun. Research shows that offering multiple ways to learn improves participants learning and behavioral outcomes from DEIB training.
Allyship Essentials
This introductory session covers essential concepts and skills that allies need to understand, including what is allyship, why allyship matters, who can be an ally, ways to be an ally and critical allyship skills. It establishes a common understanding of the importance and substance of allyship. This workshop isn't a prerequisite for other workshops, but it is strongly encouraged, particularly for groups with little recent DEIB training.
Allyship Skills
Participants explore essential allyship skills through the lens of common workplace scenarios. Through small-group activities and discussion, participants will explore potential ways for allies to intervene in the moment, and more importantly to head off microaggressions, othering, and workplace discrimination. These scenarios draw on a variety of experiences relating to a variety of marginalized identities.
Allyship Skills 2
A follow-up to our most popular allyship skills workshop. This highly interactive session uses workplace to encourage participants to think about a variety of ways they can take action to build inclusive workspaces and cultures. The focus in this session moves from reactive to proactive, systemic allyship.
Allyship Language
The 14th century Persian poet Hafiz wrote, "The words you speak become the house you live in." If we want to build inclusive houses, we have to use inclusive language. But language is tricky and ever changing. This allyship training workshops helps participants explore the importance of inclusive language, practice using it, and discover ways to continuously hone and refine their allyship language skills in the future.
Ally Action
This workshop equips participants to move beyond intention and conversation into practical, strategic action. Each participant develops a personalized ally action plan to help them work on weaknesses and grow strengths. This course uses a Cultural Intelligence (CQ) framework and a self-assessment to help participants home in on areas for improvement and cultivation.
Allyship in Healthcare
Healthcare providers play an important role in disrupting or perpetuating healthcare inequities. This workshop guides healthcare professionals to understand and explore their role as allies in the healthcare system, by examining ways to create more inclusive workplaces and healthcare practices.
Innovation For Inclusion
An innovation sprint for inclusion, this deeply engaging workshop guides participants through the process of identifying opportunities to identify, prioritize, and prototype innovations to create and sustain more inclusive workplaces. Using the Equity Centered Design framework, participants identify issues, generate ideas for innovations, and develop plans for prototyping and testing those ideas.
Empathy for Allies
Empathy is a fundamental skill for effective allyship and an essential component for building authentic relationships between people with different lived experiences. In partnership with Others Unlimited, we offer this insightful and interactive learning experience. Participants will explore ways to build their empathy skills and apply them in their allyship.
Joy of Allyship
Allyship can take an emotional toll. How do we stay actively engaged in work that is important but also sometimes frustrating and distressing? Recent research has shed light on the power of positive psychology and happiness. By leveraging the science of happiness, we can not only stay more actively engaged in the work of allyship, but we can get more fulfillment from it, even in the face of setbacks and resistance. Designed in collaboration with Project: More Happy, this session explores the foundations of happiness science and how we can apply it to build resilience.
Leaders as Allies
Leaders play a critical role in creating inclusive cultures and modeling allyship. While leaders enjoy unique power and advantages in creating change, they must also strike a balance between taking action and encouraging others to take the lead and the spotlight. It can be difficult to know when and how to weigh in and when to stand back and allow others' leadership to develop. This session explores the unique opportunities and challenges in leaders striving to be effective allies.
